For this weeks gallery show we have caught up with a notorious south london graffiti crew for an alternative collection of images depicting the more unfamiliar and unexposed act of getting to and from a train yard mission as opposed to the finished work itself. This is a very rare show and one we are very lucky to get here at Lava.

Along the Way is a collection of 35mm photos, taken by our secret guest artists.

Benji B played an exclusive triplet of tracks on his Radio One show not so long ago. And then just before Christmas he provided a free download for XLR8R. It's called 'Slowburn' and is taken from his forthcoming 'Avalanche' EP which is due out on February 28th 2011.

I'm a bit obsessed with Jimmy Edgar at the moment, having attempted a mission across East London to see him at Hoxton Bar & Grill on Saturday night. A failed mission, I may add, but at least I got to speak to him and tell him how amazing I think he is. Oh yes. Not only rocking the 80s Prince wannabe to the max, he's not just an amazing musician but also a talented fashion photographer. Wow!

Anyway, enough of that... Instra:mental have remixed 'Hot, Raw, Sex', one of the stand out tracks from his album 'XXX' which was released on Warp Records earlier this year. Get it from the XLR8R site, right HERE!

Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space

So recently dub pioneer and King Tubby's protege, Jamaican mix engineer Hopeton Brown a.k.a Scientist remixed a whole bunch of previously unreleased/exclusive tracks on Pinch's Tectonic label.

A project that has taken over a year to come into full fruition, Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space is an ambitious and impressive project spearheaded by Tectonic boss Pinch to bring dubstep’s primary influence into the forefront of our collective consciousness. The album sees King Tubby’s protégé, engineer extraordinaire and dub pioneer in his own right, Hopeton Brown aka Scientist, rework twelve exclusive and previously unreleased tracks from the contemporary dubstep landscape and put them back into the context of their heritage. Released as a double disc, with original tracks on one and Scientist’s dubs on the other, it’s a stunning and evocative opus of work, featuring tracks from influential artists such as Kode9, RSD, Cyrus, Guido, Mala, Shackleton and of course Pinch himself.
The album starts with Pinch and Ninja Tune artist Emika’s “2012″. Poignant, melancholic murmurings prevail from the off which Scientist draws out to the max, so that the soft, barely there vocal snakes around the pattering beats like whisps of smoke. Then there’s Guido’s signature synth-led psychadelia in “Korg Back”, bearing all the hallmarks of the sound he has become so known for. Scientist teases this out and adds his own touch, deftly dissecting but not destroying the sounds but rather re-moulding them like warm putty. Shackleton’s “Hackney Marshes” is another stand out, which Scientist re-works to perfection, with its pattering percussion and sparse, hollowed soundscape.

Continuing the journey into outer space, we are taken through the vocal-led whisperings of King Midas Sound, through contributions from Asbo and Distance, to seminal Bristol junglist-turned dubstep don, RSD who adds a more intrinsically reggae flavoured template to the proceedings. This immediately lends itself to Scientists’ sparkle, as he breathes a new life into the original, before we move on to newcomer Jack Sparrow, who shakes things up as we enter the finale. DMZ’s Mala brooding “City Cycle” is another milestone from the final tripartite of tracks and Scientist’s dub version really brings out the warm, fuzzy elements to the fore, before Hyperdub head honcho Kode 9 takes over for the forward thinking, tribal motif of “Abeng” which concludes the album.

Even in the opening few tracks, it is striking how the sounds and rhythms in the second generation of dub’s mutant offspring still retain the ethos of the music of its forefathers – something which becomes more and more evident as the album progresses. The project itself is nothing short of a post-modern masterpiece and its legacy will no doubt live on for future generations to enjoy, contemplate and consider late into the night.

"Space Is Only Noise...." - Nicolas Jaar

Literally can't get enough of this boy and his beautiful music...

He's only twenty years old and has already had releases on Wolf + Lamb plus runs his own label Clown & Sunset. Hold tight January for the release of his debut album 'Space Is Only Noise' on Circus Company. I can't wait to see him play at CAMP next Friday 10th December. Excited.

Here's a little taste of what I've been listening to this month...

Friction vs. Camo & Krooked ft. Dynamite MC - 'Stand Up' (Shogun Audio, 2010)

Just spotted the official video for this on @FrictionShogun's Twitter account this afternoon so thought it deserved a shout out. A club classic from Shogun Audio boss, "the assassin" DJ Friction and unstoppable duo du jour, Camo & Krooked. Friction dropped this at the Shogun Audio 6th Birthday with Dynamite on the mike and the place nearly exploded! Big tune. "What you wanna do, gonna do, stand up?!"

Pinch - 'The Boxer' (Tectonic, 2010)

Got sent this one to review for Juno Plus. Oh. My. Gosh. Totally blew me away with the sheer heaviness, latent energy and beautiful progression. I love the way it invokes "the boxer" in the title (something which Mala noticed when Pinch played it to him apparently - read the RA interview) This made me go right back to basics and buy 'Underwater Dancehall', Pinch's debut album from '07...which I should probably have owned anyway...Anyway, check this out. Darqwan's done a remix with a vocal over the top, which has been slated by a lot of reviewers, but I quite like.

Phaeleh - 'Losing You' (Afterglow, 2010)

I've only recently come across this Bristol based producer (pronounced "fell-ah") but when I heard his free download 'Afterglo' I was pretty blown away, so it was straight on to getting the album 'Fallen Light' which should be out sometime in late October or November. An outstanding piece of work. Really mellow and blissed out.

Andy C - 'Nightlife 5' (Ram Records, 2010)

Yes, here's the time I get all smug and music journo-y because I've been rinsing this on promo for the last few weeks now. But hey, it's due out in a matter of days now, so you can get it too. Much like the others in the 'Nightlife' series, it's Andy C doing what he does best, taking you through the whole spectrum of flavours - deep, minimal, dark, liquid and of course, the jump up dancefloor bangers Ram are famous for! As he revealed to me in a forthcoming interview in iDJ (watch this space), 50-60% of the content is unreleased material. Here's one of my personal favourites from former hardcore DJ, Hamilton - 'Soundboy':

Bad Company - 'The Nine' (BC Recordings, 1998)

Abso-lewwwt-ely dangerous, this is definitely up there with my favourite D&B records OF ALL TIME. Originally released by Bad Company (Maldini, Vegas, Fresh and D Bridge) in the late 90s "golden era", it's recently been featured on the '1993-2010 D&B Arena Anthology' which is due out this month, I think. It's a pretty slamming 3 CD compilation taking you from early 90s jungle to present day D&B and everything in between. Bare anthems. Anyway, screwface time...
